Motorcycle Ride to Create Memorials for Tornado-Torn Areas

Bikers from across the state will tour through the tornado torn areas of Sumner, Trousdale, and Macon counties on Saturday, May 17 to honor the memories of those lost in the February 5, 2008 tornadoes.

The Dash Memorial Motorcycle Ride will begin at Bledsoe Fort Historical Park in Castalian Springs, travel on Hwy 25 to a stop at Trousdale County High School, and continue on to a celebration of life at the Macon County High School football stadium. A special ceremony will be held at each stop.

"On February 5, 2008, we lost many of our families, friends and neighbors to the vicious tornadoes," said event organizer Sherrie Byrd. "My biggest hope is that this ride will help honor the memories of the people we lost and aid in the healing of process for their families and our community."

Registration for the ride will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Bledsoe Fort Historical Park on Hwy 25 in the Castalian Springs area of Sumner County. The first 500 bikers to register will receive a free commemorative T-shirt from the event. The rain date for the ride is set for Saturday, May 24, 2008.

A short memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. The riders will cruise up Hwy 25 into Trousdale County and stop at Trousdale County High School. Another short will be held at approximately 1:00 p.m. The riders will then proceed up Hwy 141 into Macon County and stop at the Macon County High School. A Celebration of Life will be held here at approximately 3:30 p.m. The cost is $25 and proceeds will be used to create a memorial meditation area in each county.

"The name "The Dash" is taken from a well-known poem by Linda Ellis that talks about the dash on a tombstone between the year of birth and the year of death," Byrd explained. "The dash represents the time we have spent on earth and the poem tells us that the important thing isn't what we've accumulated or what we accomplished, but rather how we lived, how we loved, and how we treated each other. I believe this is a fitting tribute to the people we lost and the fact that their "dash" was too short."

For more information and pre-registration, contact Byrd at 615-943-0332 or Brad Tuttle at 615-388-3391.

Community College Planned In Springfield

A community college could be coming to Springfield and Robertson County, according to County Mayor Howard Bradley.

A 5.43 acre site is being offered by W. A. Batson on Batson Parkway in Springfield in a joint effort with Springfield, Robertson County, and Northcrest Medical Center.

If the project comes together as envisioned, a $6 million, 30,000 square foot facility will offer classes by Austin Peay State University and Volunteer State Community College, leading to both associates and bachelors degrees, Bradley said.

A joint meeting of Robertson County's Budget, Education, and Building and Grounds Committees met May 3 to discuss the proposed location for the Robertson County Higher Education Facility. "Those three committees met and were very impressed with the site," Bradley said. "Northcrest has engaged architects to do drawings of the building for future reference. City, county, and hospital officials are currently addressing the make up of a foundation board for the college." He expects to have a resolution ready for the county commission by their June meeting.
